Second Look at the JBuds J3 Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones, November 10, 2009

In an earlier review, I mentioned that these high-quality JBuds J3s were too treble-heavy for my tastes, which too much sound in the upper register instead of a balanced sound. Of course, sound is subjective and many may find these $30 J3s worth the money.

I posted this review on Amazon and my blog and got an email from JLab Audio telling me that they were “surprised” by my criticism, that my critique contradicted focus groups and their “overwhelming conclusions.” The email also implored me to consider removing my review until I made a more thorough evaluation.

JLab Audio makes similar requests to Amazon reviewers who give their product less than sterling praise. Clearly, JLab cares about their customer feedback and wants evaluations to be both thorough and they also make it clear that the earbuds should go through a breaking-in process, playing the buds through the earphone jack for 24 hours straight.

I want to be fair so I deleted my Amazon review and want to give my evaluation as a “second look,” having allowed my J3s to go through the breaking-in process. I am comparing my $30 J3s to the $14 J2s, listening to them through a C.Crane CCR-2, a Sangean WR-2, and an iPod.

For me, the J2s, while not offering the same brightness and dynamic volume as the J3s, are for me the better deal. Simply put, I just find too much treble in the J3s at the expense of other sound range resulting in a less than balanced listening experience. On my CCR-2 radio, I turned the treble all the way down to mitigate the J3′s upper end effect. On the Sangean WR-2, the high-end was also too much for me. Same story with the iPod. Now I expect many will be happy with the bright sound in the upper register. It’s just too much for me. JLab makes a good product. I bought their original JBuds and still use them as my travel buds and I love them as they’re very comfortable. The J2s offer better fidelity than the originals. I use them for my bedside radio. The J3s for me offer too much treble but definitely bring a brightness that many will enjoy.

Update: JBuds contacted me and offered me to exchange my J3s for two pair of J2s. Kudos to JBuds for accommodating my preference for the J2s.

Amazing improvement even over the J2!, November 14, 2009

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I purchased the J2 earbuds before doing some serious flying beginning in mid-summer, and I was well pleased with the quality on them. My husband kept teasing me about the color–a lovely pink!–and it took some time to convince him to actually give them a listen. When he finally did, he was blown away, and caved on the idea of getting his own. Neither of us are huge audiophiles, but I’m a bit more picky about overall sound quality than he is. I still haven’t found a set of iPhone speakers that I’m satisfied with after 2 years of searching.

I came to Amazon to purchase a set of J2′s in white, and found that the J3 version had just been released. Reading up, I knew we needed to give these a try instead, and ordered the Titanium Silver for him.

As mentioned both in reviews and by JLab, you MUST allow these earbuds (and the J2 model) to burn in before you’re going to get the fullest range of sound. Even so, my husband was utterly stunned the first time he used his new pair. He raved about them so much, I stole them for an hour to compare to my now well-used J2′s, and I found improvements all the way around. Even with a fresh out of the box pair that had perhaps a few hours of burn in time, the trebles are incredibly clear, and the bass to my ear is both significantly deeper and clearer in tone. (I’m a bass girl, this was the most important thing for me.) The audible background “hiss” you can hear on older or poorer quality mp3s is even muted.

I bought a new Paparazzi Pink pair for myself that night, and my J2′s have been relegated to emergency backup status. With the release of the J3, J2 models are at an exceptional price, but these are so superior that they’re well worth the extra money.

    Little things:

The new packaging is fabulous; I hope more companies start working with Amazon to switch over to this type of packing material.

The little case provided with the J3 model is a big plus. I have the larger case for travel and this one is way more convenient for daily use. It’s small enough to slip into a shirt or jacket pocket.

Four sizes of silicone ear buds will make it much easier to fit for some. I did transfer over mine from the J2 as the material from those feels a bit thinner and I preferred the old color My husband found he was most comfortable using different sizes for each ear, so having the wider variety of sizes worked well for him. His only complaint is that even with the best fitting pair, occasionally he finds the fit to be almost too tight to the point of pressure-induced discomfort. Most of the time, it’s not a problem. He did have ear issues as a child and I suspect this may be a factor, as I have had no trouble at all with either model.

For reference, both pair are being used with 1st gen iPhones for music and audiobooks. I use the EQ settings for the iPod function, he makes no adjustments.

Overall, one of the best products I’ve bought in any category this year!

Great Sounding and Good Price, December 21, 2009

I have owned a lot of different headphones for my iPhones. I use mine for commute on train for music and audio books/podcasts, in the car for calls, and at the gym for music/other audio content.

These are the most expensive headphones/earbuds with a mic I’ve owned, but I have used the Sony fontopias as well as a Sennheiser in ear plug as well as bud, Skull Candy buds and plugs, as well as some “made in China” Apple and Sony knock-offs you can get for $2.99 per pair here or on eBay.

These are the best sounding headphones, buds or plugs I have heard on my iPhone, and easily the best earphones/plugs with a mic. The price is not inconsiderable, but worth it if you want nuanced sounds, clear highs, and powerful but not ridiculous bass. These are rather audiophile quality, without a doubt. Very, very impressive sound. Very efficient – quite acceptably loud for most content at half or slightly better than half volume setting.

The highs are clear, which is usually the knock on ear plug style ‘phones( better than the Sony fontopias which are boomy bass and unclear highs), midrange is balanced, lows are powerful, full, but not boomy or overpowering. Just a warm, rich sound. Very nice.

The build quality is superior to any similar product. Two weeks into it and they are sturdy, and just work. Very, very cool looking. I feel like a guy listening to $100 ear plugs. Very excellent ambient noise reduction, and reasonably comfy fit.

If the cable is allowed to flop on your chest when you run or work out, you DO get the cable thump sound. Secure the cable or loop the phones around the back of your head. I have not found this to be an impediment to my using them to spend 30 or 40 min on the treadmill, or doing resistance training with machines and weights.

Fabulous purchase. I will likely never switch to a different brand or consider an “upgrade” because even at twice the price, these are in the plug-style buds with a mic to beat. And nothing I’ve used comes close.

    not bad, November 22, 2011

Out of the package these look a lot like the j3s but in a great new package. It’s like a foil bag that you just rip open. The 45 degree angle plug isn’t quite as good as a 90 but it’s an improvement. The stress pints on the cable are beefed up compared to the j3s but not as bulky as the j4s. The wire is plenty long and seems very delicate and its rubbery feeling instead of slick like the j3s. Most of my jbuds last 3 -6 months so we’ll wait and see. The mic is in a great place, it’s closer to the y in the cable and just feels better using the control functions. They changed their warranty and it sucks now. If you’re looking for the best warranty it’s skullcandy HANDS DOWN!

These are SUPER comfortable, hardly notice them in my ear. The tips are soft. They feel light in your ears…no tugging or fatigue. I really like the grill on the back. Gives them a good look in your ears. Also great for sleeping because they don’t stick out too far.

As for the sound its very good. Very warm sound and crisp highs. Didn’t notice any mixing of the mids and bass like the j3s but I haven’t been using these long. So far seems very balanced and clear.
If these had a lifetime warranty like skullcandy these would be 5 stars.

Update 12-8-11 After a good 40 hour burn in the sound is quite stunning. They claim 23khz as the high end and you can tell. The highs are very crisp. The separation of the highs, mids, and bass are quite amazing for buds in this price range. They honestly sound as good as my klipsch image s4s. Def a good buy

Update 1-15-12 I’ve had these less than 2 months and the left earbud tube literally separated from the housing. I have kept these in a samba case at all times and only use them at home. In other words they were well taken care of. The buds still function but when I pull them out of my ears the left one separates. I am going to try their warranty process but my expectations are low. I’ve had bad experiences with jlab in the recent past. I’ve heard from friends and here in the reviews that they often reject your return saying nothing is wrong. Guess we’ll see. I’ll update when I get through the warranty process. Gotta drop the rating a star for durability. If they mess with me on the warranty it’ll drop another. I uploaded 2 photos so you could see what happened

Update 1-28-12 Went thru the warranty process and received my replacements fairly quickly. It cost $4 to ship in the defects. Only thing that would have made it better was if they’d have let me pick a diff color like skullcandy does.

Best headphones I’ve ever owned, November 20, 2011
    By
    Machiavelli (USA) –

I just got a pair of J5s and have been really impressed with the quality of the build. I have owned a lot of headphones before from all the major brands and have kind of stuck on JLab products because a) I don’t like waiting in line at stores so I buy everything on Amazon and b) Jbuds are typically the least expensive decent quality earbuds on here. I go through my buds pretty quickly as I bring them everywhere with me and usually wind up leaving them somewhere eventually. I was a big fan of the J4s and have a couple pairs of those. I liked the durability and the sound clarity was great. For my most recent purchase, I decided to try the newer version because they were a bit cheaper and I didn’t need a case. Here are my initial thoughts:

    Pros:
Sound quality- These are some of the best headphones I have ever owned for clarity of the music. I feel like I do not have to turn my iphone volume as loud as with other buds to get a decent volume level. Also, at the louder volumes, there is no distortion. This has been a problem in the past with other earphones I have used.
Look and feel great- I am a fan of the rounder tear drop shape of the buds. I prefer this over some of the boxier earbuds or the ones that look like they come from another planet. The J5s are super comfortable in your ears and you can wear them all day without any discomfort. The grill on the back is cool and is a nice touch.
The jack- JLAB has restyled the jack and the new one feels really solid and well constructed.

    Cons:
No case- The J5s do not come with a case. This was not a big deal for me as I have a couple extra. I think that you can buy the case separate if this is important for you.
Thinner cable- The cable on the J5s is thinner than the J4s. This is a better design if you need it for running or when you are on the move but some people might prefer the heavier cable.

    Conclusion:
The J5s are the best sounding buds I have ever used and it is pretty incredible that they only cost $30. If you want a thicker cable and case, look into the more expensive J4s though.

Good, but has some serious flaws, December 12, 2011
    By
    Alex

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

    PROS:
Very good sound quality, strong bass.

    CONS:
Any sort of rubbing/contact with the cord causes VERY LOUD noise in the headphones. I tried workout out with them, and it was very annoying. I cannot recommend using these headphones unless you are sitting still, even wearing them just walking around is not pleasant due to these noises. I will stick with my Sennheiser 380′s for the gym

Earbud material not very comfortable, and feels somewhat cheap and stiff. The extra large buds are HUGE! I usually wear XL but these are just a bit too big. However the normal large is a bit too small, so I ended using some extra earbuds I had from another set, which fit pretty well.

    OVERALL:
Good value for the 19.95 lightning deal, however material quality (cord, earbuds) is lacking. I will just be using these at work in my cubicle. For 30 dollars, I would recommend getting a pair of Sennheiser’s.
